The marriage records contained in this book were copied from from Book "D" and Book "E" in the Recorder's Office of Lafayette County, Missouri, in Lexington. many names were very difficult to decipher and were cross checked with the index to get the most accurate reading possible. No intentional change was made in the spelling of any name.

The marriages recorded after April of 1865 should be studied with particular care. It appears that the custom was for the newly freed slaves to be married in groups. If many marriages are listed on the same day by the same Justice of the Peace or Minister, it is possible that they were of this group, even though the record does not state African or Colored.

If a certified copy of a marriage record is desired, a fee of $1.00 is the usual charge by the Recorder.
